El Helwa Garden Garden of Haj Ahmed Located in a long valley running from the village to the lowlands at Sheikh Awad, it is easy to reach both from the town of St. Katherine and the small settlemet of Abu Seila. Wadi Itlah is a lush valley as many high mountain valleys connect to it and much of the rain water from the mountains flows through it. The Chapel of St. John the Ladder is close-by, as are some secluded basins and valleys and the canyon of Naqb Abu Seila. The water pools of Kharazet el Shaq are a day hike away.
Garden Owner
Haj Ahmed – also known as Dr. Ahmed or Hakim Ahmed – is a very well known traditional herbal healer, who set up a school to teach Bedouin kids to pass his knowledge over. His vision is a self-sufficient garden and life style based on traditional values and techniques, but using selectively what the modern world provides – he has solar panels and wants to use computers to document and archive the herbs. The Garden
Oneof the most beautiful gardens with lots of fruit trees, organic vegetables and herbs, and date palms. There are a modern kitchen, spacious stone rooms, shower and composting toilets.
